GOES-R PROJECT

The GOES-R Project is the next step in the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite program. The GOES-R series of satellites will be comprised of improved spacecraft and instrument technologies, which will result in more timely and accurate weather forecasts, and improve support for the detection and observations of meteorological phenomena that directly affect public safety, protection of property, and ultimately, economic health and development. The first launch of the GOES-R series satellite is scheduled for 2015.

The Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) and the Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is involved in the GOES-R program in the following key areas:

GOES-R Risk Reduction
Participation in the GOES-R Algorithm Working Group (AWG)
GOES-R Instrument Trade Studies
Proving Ground
