Equinox egg-balancing phenomenon a big hoax; morning completely wasted

Every dang time the vernal equinox comes around (like today) people everywhere raid their refrigerators and stupidly try to balance raw eggs on smooth surfaces. Why? I don't know. I suppose because all the forces of the solar system are somehow magically aligned today and it's one of two days (the other being the autumnal equinox) it's actually maybe possible to do. I'm a sucker for this kind of crap, so I decided to try it myself. That was a mistake. After wasting most of the morning trying to get the damn egg to stay upright I have to report that my experiment was a dismal failure as can be plainly seen in the accompanying photo. Stupid egg.

Thanks to the Internet I was able to check out the validity of this so-called "Equinox Miracle" and to tell you the truth I wasn't really that surprised to learn that it's all a bunch of pseudo-scientific hooey. The equinox offers no "special conditions" for balancing eggs. If you're patient enough it can be done any day of the year (yeah, sure), and you don't have to have a PhD in physics - anyone can do it. Except me evidently. (yes, yes - I should have Googled before doing the experiment but that's neither here nor there at this point). Oh well, you can read about it yourself here and here.

But you know what? Why should I be acting like I have egg on my face? You should be thanking me; think of all the time I've saved you. Consider it my gift to you on this first day of Spring.

Maybe you have to be right on the equator, or something like that, for the egg deal to work.

I can almost get mine to balance... but the rotation of the Earth keeps moving the countertop.

No mention of the egg phenomenon here, but here are some other misconceptions/myths about the vernal Equinox.

Mark cracked an egg, but check out what this wrestler in Afghanistan might have cracked today to celebrate the equinox.

Reminds me of the story told about Columbus. He was back from one of his voyages and at a dinner party when some of the guests made light of his accomplishment saying that everyone knew it could be done. He took a hard-boiled egg and challenged anyone to make it stand on end. No one could. He then smashed the end of the egg on the table and it balanced perfectly. He then said, anything is easy to do after someone else has shown it can be done. That's your moral for the day.

I searched all over YouTube for a clip of CJ trying the egg-balancing trick in "The West Wing" episode called "Evidence of Things Not Seen." One of my favorites, and that bit is not to be found...

Consider it my gift to you on this first day of Spring.

Except, according to the US Weather Bureau, spring has been going on for the better part of three weeks.

Right, like you thought Gene wouldn't chime in with that...

It's not exactly the Equinox egg trick, but here's some pretty cool video of Johnny Carson and Dom DeLuise having fun with eggs, and they start out upside down.

I thought it was all a hoax too. I never heard of balancing an egg on the first day of summer because of the alignments of the sun and planets.... but I tried for less than 5 minutes and I balanced an egg on its end. My husband could not.... guess he didn't have the patience. I have pictures to prove it.

That is because it is the first day of spring you are supposed to do it. It works, you have to find flat ground and the best time is as close to noon as possible. Just carefully set it upright, it takes a few tries

Not a hoax. Did it on the vernal equinox when I was a kid. Was able to stand the egg on end over and over with relative ease. Have never been able to do it not on equinox day. Have pictures I took when I was 10. I'm 34 now. Not a hoax.
