The impressive and massive sunspot visible during October 23rd's partial eclipse is the largest seen in a quarter century. The next day it produced an equally impressive and massive solar flare.

Some close-ups of the Sun are captured from Earth by shooting it either through powerful telephoto lenses mounted on the cameras themselves or by mounting the camera to the eyepiece of an earthbound telescope. Also, orbital telescopes, such as the Hubble Space Telescope or NASA's Solar Dynamic Observatory are fitted with powerful image capturing devices that can gather wonderfully detailed and close-up images of our sun and other celestial bodies in the universe.
