So what did you do over the weekend? I guess we all missed these wild times going on in Botswana, Africa. Check out this video of an elephant pool party. I wonder if the Republican National Convention will get this crazy here in St. Paul in September?

How cool was that? Lucky for these guys they don't have some annoying lifeguard telling them to stop splashing.

I was particularly surprised to see the section where the young bulls were mock-mounting each other. It got me thinking about other ways that elephants play. I found this interesting paper about play in elephants (PDF download) from the site, Elephant Voices with lots more information on this sort of play. It's fascinating to see all the different patterns of complex play that elephants engage in.

Oh and I forgot to say: my favorite play category in elephants is "floppy running." Isn't that a great name? From the above linked PDF:

Perhaps the most quintessentially joyful elephantine play behavior is the
Floppy-Run (Moss, 1988), a loose, floppy gait, accompanied by shaking a
lowered head from side-to-side, allowing the ears to flap against the neck
and curling the tail up high. Floppy-Running is primarily associated with
lone locomotor play but may also be observed during escalated contact
play and environmental exploration play.
